|Linux is a successful operating system which has reached a great diffusion
in the last years, and is among the others the fastest growing in operating
system diffusion. Such a success can be explained by some factors:
Prisma Engineering is using Linux from the beginning, and has acquired the experience to install, maintain and develop Linux based solutions. Linux applications developed inside Prisma Engineering comprise both character oriented or GUI applications. We are now working on Linux as an alternative to embedded operating systems and for dedicated solutions.
Linux Solution for connectivity
By using Linux and the Linux applications we have implemented an Internet access system, which provides to LAN users Internet, email and intranet services, using only one access point and one ISP subscription, with the security of a firewall.
This system is active and alive the whole time, and provides a continous and reliable service with very little administration effort.

The ISP access can be implemented both with traditional phone lines (POTS) and modem or with ISDN lines; the call to the ISP is done only when required and is brought down when the line is not used.
Linux can be used in order to implement a private network using the public Internet infrastructures. The typical corporate Local Area Network (LAN) or Wide Area Network (WAN) is an example of a private network. There was a time, when companies could allow their LANs to operate as separate, isolated islands. Each branch office might have its own LAN, with its naming scheme, email system and even its network protocol.
As more company resources moved to computers, there come a need to interconnect remote offices. Initially, this was done with leased lines, which are expensive and charged by distance.
Linux provides a great open source base for implementing Virtual Private
Networks (VPNs) in a reliable way, both from the usage and the security
point of view. Prisma Engineering is able to provide access solution for
Internet access, LAN to LAN interconnect, intranet services and VPNs, using
standard transmission technologies like ISDN and Frame Relay.
